If you donated to a campaign using PayPal and your payment did not successfully process, here are some instructions about how you can update your account:

The most common reasons for a transaction failing are:

  1. A credit or debit card being cancelled or changed between the time you made your pledge and the end of the campaign;
  2. Old or incorrect credit cards being connected as your default or backup payment method with PayPal (for this particular transaction)
  3. Your account may be flagged for security reasons by your bank or PayPal. PayPal's security is automatically triggered if your bank rejected the payment.

To update your information, log in to your PayPal account right away to update your payment back-up source, which shouldn’t take long. Be sure to link a credit card (not a bank account) as the back-up payment for this particular transaction, and it should work. 

PayPal has recently released a new version for the majority of users, so the directions below apply to both the Classic page (the old version) and the "New Experience."

This is for the Classic Experience: 
 
Here’s how to change your backup payment method for a billing agreement:
  1. Log in to your PayPal account.
  2. Click Profile near the top of the page.
  3. Click My money.
  4. Click Update beside "My preapproved payments."
  5. Select the merchant name for the billing agreement you want to change.
  6. Click Change under Funding Source.
  7. Select your backup payment method, then click Save.
If you do not want a card or bank to be used for any billing agreements you can disable it as a funding source:
  1. Log in to your PayPal account.
  2. Click Profile near the top of the page.
  3. Click My money.
  4. Click Update beside "My preapproved payments."
  5. Click Set Available Funding Sources.
  6. Deselect the funding source you do not want to use and click Save.

For the New Experience follow the steps below:

  1. Log in to your PayPal account.
  2. Click the Gear icon in the top right corner next to Log Out
  3. Click on Payment Preferences
  4. Click on Update to the right of "My preapproved payments."
 
For New PayPal for Business:

  1. Log in to your PayPal Account
  2. Click on the Profile icon in the top right corner next to Log Out
  3. Click on Profile and settings
  4. Click on My Money
  5. Click on Update to the right of "My preapproved payments." 


If fixing the above does not resolve the problem, please be prepared to contact PayPal directly to lift any restrictions they may have imposed.
